Less than a week after announcing five grand jury indictments as part of an ongoing automobile “give up” scheme to collect insurance premiums, New Jersey officials have announced sentences for three more people linked to the same fraud.

Charges against all three stemmed from an ongoing investigation into the scheme, whose ringleader, Jose Torres, 37, of Paterson, N.J., was previously sentenced to eight years in state prison, according to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.

In the latest action, Gladys Ramos, 55, also of Paterson, was sentenced to two years  of probation and ordered to pay $1,801 in restitution in a New Jersey Superior Court. She had previously pleaded guilty last year and signed a civil consent order for $5,000, officials said.

Ramos admitted that on Oct. 5, 2006, she fraudulently reported to the Paterson Police Department that her 2006 Chevrolet Equinox was stolen, when it had actually been sold to undercover detectives a few days earlier. Ramos subsequently filed a false vehicle theft claim to Allstate, receiving $19,600 illegally from the insurer.

Two other co-defendants were sentenced earlier this year: Mark McCaffrey, 31, of Landing, N.J., and Caseem Gresham, 37, of Saddle Brook, N.J. Both received sentences of three years probation and 75 hours of community service and previously signed civil consent orders in the amount of $5,000.

In addition, McCaffrey must pay $10,213 in restitution and Gresham must repay $8,805.

McCaffrey admitted filing a false report with GEICO claiming his 1999 Lincoln Navigator was stolen and Gresham for a similar claim to First Trenton Cos./Travelers Insurance Co. regarding his 2005 Honda Accord.

In both cases, the men illegally received money from the insurers when their vehicles were not stolen, but sold to undercover detectives.
